how to grate onions quickly & easily
Since I’ve started using this technique, I no longer dread grating onions. You can also use this method for celery too. It makes grating easy and soooo fast!
The key to making life easy for yourself when you are grating an onion is to leave just enough of the onion’s basal plate intact so that it will keep all the onion layers together when you are grating them. So grab an onion and, with a knife, gently and carefully remove just enough of the end from which the root sprouts.Then you can remove the skin. This is what the basal plate of your onion needs to look like:
Slice it vertically in half, so that the cut runs from the root to the top of the onion. Now you can really see the basal plate.
It’s going to be your best friend for the minute or so it will take you to grate that whole onion because all of the layers will stay put. Keep grating until you get to the little nub. The onion will look like this:
And the celery will look like this:
